Empowering Students to Combat Sexual Harassment in the Digital Age: Assumption College of Davao’s Successful Seminar

In a proactive effort to address the escalating concerns of sexual harassment in the digital realm, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), in partnership with the KASAMA Student Council at The Assumption College of Davao recently organized a highly successful Anti-Sexual Harassment Seminar. The event, held with the participation of students from various college departments, centered on the theme “Breaking Barriers: Combating Sexual Harassment in the Digital Age.”

The seminar, which took place on August 16, 2023, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM for the evening class, and was repeated on August 22, 2023, for another evening class, was conducted at the GYM of the said school. The institution’s commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment was evident in the engaging and comprehensive program put forth by the OSA.

At the heart of the seminar was the esteemed resource person, Kristi Lou S. Taming, a Registered Social Worker and a recognized authority in the field. With a wealth of knowledge and experience, Taming addressed the pressing issue of sexual harassment across various digital platforms. Her insights provided participants with a deep understanding of the evolving nature of harassment in the modern age and the urgency of combating it effectively.

Taming’s presentation emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the subtle yet pervasive forms of harassment that often go unnoticed in online interactions. She highlighted the significance of consent, respect, and empathy in digital communication, calling upon students to be active bystanders and allies in the fight against online harassment.

The attendees, comprised of students from different college departments, were highly engaged throughout the seminar. Interactive discussions, real-life case studies, and practical tips for safeguarding oneself and others online were all part of the insightful program. Participants left the seminar equipped with not only knowledge but also the confidence to confront and report instances of harassment whenever they encounter them.

The Assumption College of Davao’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Seminar stands as a commendable effort to create a secure educational environment where students can thrive without the fear of harassment, even in the digital age. With the knowledge gained from this seminar, participants are better prepared to contribute to a culture of respect and awareness both within the college community and beyond.
